December 19th, 1937
Dear Diary,
A few days ago, I have arrived in this peculiar, old city in a country called “China.” I caught cold since it is freezing cold in here. I heard that Imperial Japan attacked China, and the Chinese seemed to have some difficulties while defending against them. But why do we have to observe people from this country, and risk many lives of our friends? They are much bigger than Japan and have more population! There must be nothing to learn from this war! They must be able to defeat them deftly! In addition, if I was not chosen as an observer, I would be enjoying the tranquil time with my family! Well, I wonder if my brother Gregory is spending a great time. If he loses concentration, he will find some difficulty on graduating high school. And, most importantly, one of my concerns and/or wishes is my brother applying to college and being accepted. Also, I pray to god every night for my family to be safe, and the war to end as early as possible. I sent a letter to my brother, Gregory, and I hope he would analyze the situations in a few days. However, I feel sorry for my brother since he will be reading this letter right before Christmas.
Yesterday during the day, there was a gunfight going on in the city of Nanking, even though some citizens were still in their houses. Since it was day, we could find the enemies easily. However, this meant that they could find us easily too. To gain as much information as we could, we scattered into a few groups. My group, however, was having difficulties. To not be seen the enemies, my best friend, Jack, and I entered one of the buildings, where citizens were still staying inside. However, one of the enemies followed us, and we had nowhere to escape to. If we were found, we would be killed since we were not given any weapons. Suddenly, one of the house doors opened, and a girl told us to enter, using body language. Her name was Gao Jing Wei. She and her mother recommended us to sit, since they realized that we were on their side. Thanks to them, we were not found by the enemies, and could escape after the sounds of guns vanished. We do not know what had happened to them later on, but we safely arrived to our camp, without being shot by the enemies.
Everyday night before falling asleep, I reflect back to that day and think deeply about the circumstances of the day, revise them, and imagine what would have happened if we were found out by the enemies. Sometimes, I have some weird and scary nightmares, so I wake up in the middle of night, while I am all wet because of the cold sweat. I wonder when Chinese troops will be able to defeat the enemies, so we can return back to our home. I want to go back to Cerritos, where my family and friends will welcome me back. However, at the moment, I am in a country where I have never been in. Also, the appearances of them and us are completely different. This is a secret between you and I: when I first saw them, I thought they were aliens! Many were bold, just like E.T. is.
I have been spending a tranquil time in my hometown for last few years. However, I am now outraged by the Japanese people! Why wouldn’t they inform us about the incident before they bomb the island? This is very cruel and unfair as we did not know such an incident would happened, and could not prepare to defend! You know that they attacked the Pearl Harbor yesterday? I lost my best friend, Jack, due to this incident! Jack, sorry for not being with you, but I hope you had gone to a nice place. One solace is that my other friend, Henry, survived thousands of Japanese bombs. For sure, he would have been scared and shaking of fear. However, Japan attacked us again, and had declared war against us, so the air force basement is assembling armies to prepare to go to war in the future, so I had a tryout as a pilot in Mather field, California. Isn’t this a nice idea? If I am selected as one of the pilots, I can revenge for Jack and cool my rage as we conquer more and more of the Japanese lands. Also, I might be able to meet my other friend, Henry, since he is still staying in Pearl Harbor until we arrive in the Pacific. But the selfishness of the Japanese people is that they attacked us again, and made an announcement appealing that they had declared war on us a day before! Of course, nobody would believe them now. However, one of the most important objectives in this war for myself is to survive, as I do not want to be killed by the enemies.
This time, however, I am going to war as a volunteer, because I want to revenge for my friend. This, means that I am not forced by the state to go to war. I have an objective to kill all the Japanese soldiers for him to be pleasured. I think the U.S. army is going to attack all the islands that Japan is in position at the moment. If we conquer all those islands, we will be able to lower Japanese armies’ mood and we will be able to start attacking the main land of Japan. I wish that I will be accepted by the army and avenge for my precious Jack. Again, I do not want war in the U.S. mainland, as I want to keep my family and other friends safe. I don’t want to lose any other people are important and significant to me.
As we start attacking the Pacific, the Japanese will lose control of themselves after seeing our greatness in both quantity and quality. I expect them to be defeated greatly and so we can win this war. I only hope that this war would not be a part of World War II. Also, since my brother is 21, I wish that he would not be one of the soldiers fighting the Japanese soldiers.
Last night, I safely arrived in Pearl Harbor. Now, a serious war will be beginning soon. Our plan is to occupy each of the Pacific islands by one by one, since they are now all owned by Japan. My friend, Henry, and I are in different troops. Each troop is consisted of 20 to 30 men, and they usually stay together during fight to survive. However, since I am one of the pilots, I am not included in one of the troops. Instead, we stay as a group of 5 combat planes, to watch out for attack from the enemies. Pilot is one of the most convenient and safest role in a gunfight because it's almost impossible for the enemies to shoot accurately at planes traveling at 400 miles per hour. However, we still have to be careful because one perfect shot may be able to destroy the plane.
My friend, Henry, who had been in Pearl Harbor for longer time than I have been, told me some strategies and skills to survive from surprise attacks of the enemies or food shortage. While the island was peaceful, we had great time together. We would hang out, and have an investigation in the forest. Since the arrival of food and water transportation was often delayed, we sometimes had to look for on our own. Although we found some wells from time to time, they were mostly poisoned by the Japanese soldiers, and we found dead animals around them, which drank the water from the well. Once we found a well with clear water, we refilled our water bottles again and again, and emptied water in few minutes. The general announced us that we are going to fight the Japanese troops as soon as possible. Our plan is to train for next few months, and have a surprise attack on the Japanese army in other islands. We are planning to occupy Guadalcanal by December of next year, so we will be able to finish the war in the Pacific in 1943.
The reason for terminating the war as soon as possible for the country is to sacrifice less innocent soldiers and defeat Japan. My personal reason is to save my family members from this tremendous war and prevent my brother from coming to the army. He seems to be thinking a little about joining the army, even though he hasn't mentioned about it. However, if the war ends soon, he will not be able to fight for the country, and be safely staying at home.
On February 13th, my partner, Jake, and I received an order. The order said that we were to head to Vietnam on February 15th, and observe the situation of Asia's mainland before we will be attacking Guadalcanal in a few months. Even though Vietnam was about 3700 miles away from Pearl Harbor, our basement, we could reach Vietnam quickly as we travelled in a plane. It took about 10 hours for us to reach Vietnam, in comparison to 5 days of travel from California to Pearl Harbor. We landed on a forest of Vietnam. We did not know which city we landed on, but we knew that it was Vietnam because we saw a coast near the place where we landed on. We preserved our plane in the middle of the forest, and headed ourselves towards the town. However, Japanese would kill Americans if they were found, so we had to hide ourselves from their sights. Since we arrived quite late, we had a short dinner time, and waited until all the lights of the town were vanished. Maybe it was around 11, when we went out to the town and started looking for some places to hide for long time. After we marked a few places, we went back to the plane and spent a night.
Early in the morning, we went back to the town. We headed to one of the marks. We could clearly see a white "X" marked on a box behind a trash can. We went inside, and made a hole to watch and listen to observe the townspeople. There were not so many Japanese soldiers, which meant that large portion of soldiers is concentrated in the Pacific islands. This was a bad news to us. However, we did not understand what people said, thus there was no significance for this objection. This only thing we knew was that the town was Cam Ranh. At night, we were to prepare to go back to Pearl Harbor. We were decided to leave at 6 o'clock. However, at 4:05 in the morning, we received a call. We had to find a big house, luckily in the town of Cam Ranh, and rescue a British military officer named Samuel Wilson. The house was big, so we landed in the garden. Samuel was waiting for us, and we departed as soon as he jumped into the plane. He said that he was caught by the Japanese soldiers after the Singapore War. A little after lunch, we arrived at Pearl Harbor. There, Samuel rode a huge ship to go to British army basement located in America.
However, the objection was a failure. We had to attack Guadalcanal, with the only information we got from Vietnam: there must be large portion of Japanese soldiers in Guadalcanal and other Pacific islands. Well, I hope this will be the last fight of this war, since I do not want my brother to be involved in this war. I must survive this fight because this might be the last fight.
